This fragmentation hurts portability. Code that performs well on one runtime may behave differently (or poorly) on another, even though it's using "standard" APIs. A quadtree does the same thing for two-dimensional space. It takes a rectangular region and divides it into four equal quadrants: northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast.
